Thanksgiving Magnifying Glass

by Beatrice Jean-Baptiste

Psalm 69:30

I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.

Roger Bacon is credited with constructing the first magnifying glass for scientific purposes.

In 1250, Bacon was an Oxford lecturer studying refraction and reflection through various experiments involving mirrors. While doing so, he determined how a convex lens magnified an object.

I think it’s safe to say that he needs a Google Doodle in his honor. His discovery changed the world as we know it, and, as a person who wears glasses, his early work on optics impacted my life.

Magnification enlarges the size of an object, allowing us to see it better. While I was growing up, the best part about science labs involved using magnifying glasses to have an exaggerated look at something.

Like magnifying glasses, gratitude enlarges our view of God. It allows us to look beyond our current situations and focus on the Sovereign of the Universe.

The same way glasses help a person to see, gratitude gives us a new set of eyes to see God with hearts filled with faith and assurance. It allows our hearts to cry out in adoration as we begin to extol and magnify God for all He’s done on our behalf.

When we see God in all of His glory and goodness, we’ll join in with David in Psalm 69 and magnify the Sovereign of the Universe with praise and thanksgiving.

Reflection

How does thanksgiving and praise magnify my view of God?

Prayer

Heavenly God, I will praise Your name with a song and will magnify You with my thanksgiving. You are my everything. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
