Growing up, I was privileged to know not only both sets of my grandparents, but also two sets of great grandparents.

One of the things I loved about the older couples I spent time with was the connection they had. Couples who have been married and doing life together for so long know what each other likes, what makes them laugh or cry. They can finish each other’s sentences, and communicate so much through a simple look.

We are told in the Bible that a married couple becomes one, and we can especially see it in those who have been joined together in marriage for decades.

We are also told that we can become one with the Lord. In 1 Corinthians 6, we are given the imagery of a man and woman coming together and becoming one, in the flesh. In verse 17, we are told that we also can become one with God when we unite ourselves with Him, but in the spirit, not in the flesh.

We are given the Holy Spirit when we become joined with Christ through baptism and thus are one in spirit with Him. In this way we begin to think and act like our God.

Just as an old married couple knows each other, we can know our God more deeply each day we are in relationship with Him.
