When the prophet Elijah was on the run from murderous Queen Jezebel, he complained to God of his treatment. In response, God unfolded a parade of mighty wonders before him: windstorm, earthquake, and fire. But God was not in any of the noise. Instead, He spoke to Elijah, renewing his courage with a “still small voice” (1 Kings 19:1-12).
Today, God still speaks to us in the quiet. “Be still and know that I am God,” He declares (Psalm 46:10). When we deliberately take a break from the world and leave its cares behind, then God can refill and rejuvenate us.
Quiet is associated with peace
Behold, a son shall be born to you, who shall be a man of peace. I will give him rest from all his enemies all around; for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness to Israel in his days.
Jesus has the power to quiet demons
Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!”
Volume is no indicator of wisdom
The words of the wise heard in quiet are better than the cry of him who rules among fools.
Some times it is necessary to cry out to God
Behold, two blind men sitting by the road, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, “Lord, have mercy on us, you son of David!” The multitude rebuked them, telling them that they should be quiet, but they cried out even more, “Lord, have mercy on us, you son of David!”
Quiet is a better blessing than abundance
Better is a dry morsel with quietness, than a house full of feasting with strife.
I pray for those in positions of authority so I may lead a quiet life
I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks be made for all men: for kings and all who are in high places, that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior.
Without quiet, there is no rest
I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither do I have rest; but trouble comes.
God treasures a quiet spirit
Let your beauty be not just the outward adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on fine clothing; but in the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.
Righteousness results in a quiet, peaceful confidence
The work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever. My people will live in a peaceful habitation, in safe dwellings, and in quiet resting places.
Jesus has the power to quiet every storm
He awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
