Contentment — being at peace with oneself, one’s surroundings, and one’s situation — eludes many. Some spend their entire lives stressed, in a state of chronic discontent.
Contentment is not synonymous with happiness. It is not based on wealth, health, or physical comfort. Rather, it is a conscious decision to rest fully in God’s hands, trusting that He always has our best interests at heart.
Contentment stems from fearing God
The fear of the LORD leads to life, then contentment; he rests and will not be touched by trouble.
Contentment with one’s work is as important as acting honorably
He said to them, “Collect no more than that which is appointed to you.” Soldiers also asked him, saying, “What about us? What must we do?” He said to them, “Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages.”
Contentment can save marriages — even marriages with unbelievers
But to the rest I — not the Lord — say, if any brother has an unbelieving wife, and she is content to live with him, let him not leave her. The woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he is content to live with her, let her not leave her husband.
I can learn to be content in any circumstance
Not that I speak because of lack, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content in it. I know how to be humbled, and I also know how to abound. In everything and in all things I have learned the secret both to be filled and to be hungry, both to abound and to be in need.
Godly contentment is a great blessing
But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we certainly can’t carry anything out. But having food and clothing, we will be content with that.
Learn to be content with what you have — the constant companionship of Jesus
Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.”
Be content to help when asked
Please let us go to the Jordan, and each man take a beam from there, and let’s make us a place there, where we may live.” He answered, “Go!” One said, “Please be pleased to go with your servants.” He answered, “I will go.”
I can choose to be content, even when things look bleak
Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects. Therefore do not despise the chastening of the Almighty.
Find contentment in your faith
It is good to not eat meat, drink wine, nor do anything by which your brother stumbles, is offended, or is made weak. Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who doesn’t judge himself in that which he approves. But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because it isn’t of faith; and whatever is not of faith is sin.
Live contentedly
Behold, that which I have seen to be good and proper is for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy good in all his labor, in which he labors under the sun, all the days of his life which God has given him; for this is his portion.
Giving cheerfully is a hallmark of living with contentment
Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that you, always having all sufficiency in everything, may abound to every good work.
Jesus’ peace and promises give me contentment
Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me. Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.
