There is an object-lesson parable of a man who was exploited as a slave.

When the man was placed on sale, a wealthy farmer purchased him. The enslaved man was of an intimidating, muscle-bound stature, and very defiant. At the site of sale and through the ride back to the farmer’s home, he made it clear that he would not work.

Upon arrival, the farmer showed the man where he would reside — a quaint, well-furnished, guesthouse.

The enslaved man reiterated, “I will not work for you!”

The farmer clarified his intentions. “I did not purchase you to make you a slave but to set you free. You are free, and so is this guesthouse. No labor required. I will even put the deed in your name.”

The free man was moved to uncontrollable tears. He crumpled down and grabbed the farmer’s feet, exclaiming, “I will serve you forever!”

Yes, God runs His universe and directs those who live in it through a set of laws. However, everything He does is out of love. Through love, He has wooed us to Himself and rescued us from the chains of sin and death.

Only when we stay within His boundaries of protection do we experience the greatest joy and liberty.
