“Be courageous, and let’s be strong for our people, and for the cities of our God; and may the LORD do what seems good to him.”
In college, I once committed to giving up sugar for six weeks.
I had tried something similar before and had always failed, but this time was different. This time I made this commitment with two of my close girlfriends so that we could help each other remain strong. When the desire to have sugar became too strong, we were able to support each other so we all were able to fulfill our commitment.
In our spiritual walk there are commitments that we have made, principles we have said that we will stick by. However, like many things, we try to muster up our own courage and stay strong on our own. This typically ends up in us being disappointed in ourselves because we fail.
We should take the example of Joab here in 2 Samuel 10. Verse 12 talks of remaining courageous and strong, trusting God to do what is right. However, the preceding verse lets us know that Joab didn’t enter his battle alone. He had a partner, and they were to support each other if the battle got too strong for either of them.
These army commanders knew the importance of helping each other be strong and courageous while trusting God with the outcomes. Like Joab, we can remain courageous and strong, defending our principles with people around us who will help us stand firm.
Where in my life do I need to take a courageous stand? What people do I have on my side who will help me to remain strong in that stand?
Dear Lord, Please help to surround me with people who support each other to courageously defend Your principles. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
