Creatures of Habit, Defined by Attitude!

by David Haase

Ecclesiastes 2:26

For to the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he gives travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him who pleases God. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.

The routine was always the same:

I woke up at the same time every day. I filled the coffee pot with water so the coffee would be ready after my shower. Letting the dog out and feeding her seemed like a chore; sometimes she irritated me as she stood at the door whining. Next, I took the medicine the doctor prescribed. I was tired of taking it. Sometimes I felt as if I should stop.

I had become a creature of habit, doing the same thing in the exact sequence each day. Sometimes I felt like it was a job. The enjoyment in life was gone. Was I chasing after the wind?

Nevertheless, I chose the dog; that dog did not choose me. And I knew the doctor was trying to keep me healthy.

Why was I angry? Why was I simply giving up or becoming self-centered?

It might be that I got up in a hurry, leaving God out of the beginning of my day. His gift of blessings became dreary work when I neglected to make Him first.

A simple change, spending time with God first thing every morning, enabled me to change my attitude and my day! My routine is still the same. Praise God, I am not!

Reflection

Am I chasing after the wind? What steps can I take to improve my attitude about my life?

Prayer

Gracious, loving God, Give me the strength to wake each day with You in my heart and on my mind. May the Holy Spirit lead me through the day with the task of love at hand. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen!
