Brought Low and Saved

by Brenda Kis

Psalm 116:5-6

The LORD is gracious and righteous. Yes, our God is merciful. The LORD preserves the simple. I was brought low, and he saved me.

After vomiting violently for weeks, I finally called the doctor.

As he questioned me, I mentioned that the prenatal vitamins he’d prescribed and given me samples of looked different from those the pharmacist had sold me. Then we discovered the terrible reality. The pharmacist had given me arthritis medicine instead!

“This medicine was tested on rats,” the doctor announced, “and found to cause deformities in their offspring.”

Stunned, I began to sob. What would happen to my baby? There were seven long months ahead of me before I would see the results of weeks of ingesting these powerful chemicals.

Gripping the steering wheel on my way home, I told God that He had permission to do whatever He felt was best. Instant peace flooded my soul.

The day arrived when our perfectly formed son made his appearance.

As the years rolled by, we watched him finish high school early, going on to complete a Ph.D. degree in his early twenties. Today he serves as a university professor.

But his story is not the miracle.

The miracle happened in me during the months-long journey of pregnancy when I chose to believe that whatever happened was okay with me, because I know who God is and have learned to trust His choices in my life. Today, that same miracle of peace can be yours too.

Reflection

When I struggle with despair or fear, how can I remember that the God who made me wants to preserve me?

Prayer

Heavenly Lord, Please help me to be at peace, no matter what I face, because You are gracious, righteous, and merciful. My life is in Your hands. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
