We Could All Use A Little More Animal-like Instinct

by Darla Noble

Matthew 14:27

But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.”

Animals have a God-given ability to sense danger.

But God didn’t just equip them to know when danger was lurking around the corner. He also gave them tools to deal with it. Some fight. Some run. Some disguise themselves, or in some cases, stand motionless, practically invisible, waiting for the danger to pass. These animals know that as long as they do their part, they’ll be fine.

You would think that because we are created in God’s image we would be at least as wise as animals, secure in the knowledge that as long as we do our part — as long as we let God take charge — everything will be fine. But we don’t. Often, we’re quick to say we trust God, but fear says otherwise.

I’m not talking about being nervous, feeling gut-punched when you get bad news, or even questioning when you’ll see good coming from bad. Such feelings are only natural. But when mind-crippling, faith-robbing, give-in-to-the-devil fear creeps in, we need to show it to the door. We need to be more “animal-like” and say, “Thanks, God. I know You’ve got this.”

The next time you feel afraid, stop looking in the face of fear and start looking up to the One who can handle it all.

Reflection

What fears do I need to give over to God? How has today’s verse encouraged me to do so?

Prayer

Dear God, Help me always know that when I am afraid I can trust in You. You are my God. I love You and praise You. In Jesus’ precious name I pray, Amen.
