A Time for Renewal

by Beatrice Jean-Baptiste

Hebrews 9:7

But into the second the high priest alone, once in the year, not without blood, which he offers for himself, and for the errors of the people.

Yom Kippur, or Day of Atonement, is the most sacred day in Judaism.

Yom Kippur is the most celebrated Jewish holiday. The day is centered on repentance and atonement.

Yom Kippur is a time of reflection in which Jewish adherents pause everything and make amends for the sins they have committed. They spend 25 hours fasting and praying. During this Jewish holiday, work is forbidden and synagogue attendance is at its highest. Yom Kippur is a time of reflection, repentance, and renewal.

As Christians, we can learn a lot from this sacred Jewish holiday because it points to our need to reflect, repent, and rededicate ourselves to God. In the busyness of life, we often compromise intimacy with God by not making time to commune with Him a priority.

Perhaps we need to press “pause” and seek God through prayer and fasting. We need to refrain from trying to work out our salvation and rest in the sacrificial work Jesus finished for us on the cross.

Today is a great time to rest in God’s gift of salvation and ask Him to heal any areas in our lives that need renewal.

Reflection

How can I receive God’s healing touch and renewal in my life? What steps can I take right now to press “pause” and commune with God about the cares of my life?

Prayer

Dear God, Forgive me for all the ways I have gone astray. Please give me a heart of repentance and renew a steadfast spirit in me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
