Hear, Israel: the LORD is our God. The LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might.
Today’s verses are known as the shema.
Shema is the Hebrew word for “listen,” which is exactly what these verses are telling us to do.
When you think about it, the word shema is what we are supposed to do with the entire Bible. Listening is also the Bible’s most central theme.
The verse tells us how to listen — with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our might. The beauty of it is that when we listen with our heart, soul, and might, we will love God in the very same way! Our desires, our thoughts, our plans, and our daily lives will be a testimony of God’s power, love, and grace.
God has sent us His Word. As we read the Bible, we are listening to God’s guidance, hearing His plan for us, and becoming increasingly familiar with His voice.
There is only one path that leads to true happiness — the path that follows God in faithful obedience in all things. When we love God with our entire being we will be filled with the joy we all long for but cannot find anywhere else. How can we better learn of His love for us? Just listen….
Am I listening to God today? What is He telling me?
Dear God, Please help me to love You with my whole being and glorify You in all I do. As I fill myself with Your Word, help me to hear You and listen to what You have to say to me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
