Swedish pastor Reverend Carol Boberg took a walk by his countryside coast one day when a violent thunderstorm overtook him, stranding him.

Then, just as suddenly, the storm subsided. The brilliant sun pushed through clouds. Birds picked up their songs, and the reverend, awestruck, fell to his knees in adoration of the fierce and beautiful strength of God.

From this humbling afternoon, he penned the original version of what is named the world’s most beloved hymn: “How Great Thou Art.”

Perhaps it is so loved because it says in song what so many of us feel in our hearts — God’s creation humbles us. It reminds us of our limited power, limited understanding, and our great need for the great God who created all.

Humble is a good place to be.

God’s Word holds rewards for those in awe of Him. Humble people are promised God’s guidance (Psalm 25:9) and saving from trouble (Psalm 18:27). They are promised wisdom (Proverbs 11:2) and grace (James 4:6). God views the humble with distinction (Matthew 18:4) and promises them honor (Proverbs 18:12).

Our world provides many opportunities to find humility.

The next time one of life’s great storms overwhelms us, if we’ll recognize the inefficiency we feel, we can embrace God and the rewards He promises for our humility.
