Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.
Since ancient times, yokes have teamed up strong, working animals.
Though a yoke could be used on a single ox, donkey, cow, or mule, yokes were most often used for animals in pairs. Together, they could pull plows through dry fields or tow heavy loads.
Here, it appears that Jesus is referring to Himself not as the farmer who places a yoke on his willing servant, but as the strong beast asking for us to share in His work. “Take my yoke upon you,” He says. “Come alongside. Walk where I walk. Learn from Me. Together, we will accomplish God’s purpose.”
Pairing ourselves with God is the definition of the Christian life. It is a two-person job.
If we take Jesus’ yoke upon us, if we become His disciples, then an expert leads us. The fields we plow will undoubtedly grow excellent harvests. The stones we pull will build heavenly homes. Though we walk through dry deserts, like the Israelites, or hide in the brush, like young David, we’re not alone. If we let Him, Jesus will walk alongside us. He can turn desert roads into Promised Lands and homeless wanderings into pathways to a palace.
Stay yoked to Jesus. Keep the communication open. Listen to His Word. Speak to Him throughout your day, and the road He walks with you will ultimately lead to rest.
To what other things in life do I feel yoked? Where are they leading me?
Yes, dear Lord, I want to be yoked to You today. Direct my every step. Please help me to see that You are leading me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
