They all ate and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of that which remained left over from the broken pieces. Those who ate were about five thousand men, in addition to women and children.
Today, imagine with me….
You are sitting on a hillside, listening to Jesus. People bring their sick friends and relatives, and Jesus heals them. He starts to speak. You sit as close to Him as possible, eager to hear His stories. The crowd hangs on every word.
The day passes faster than you realize. As the sun starts setting, His disciples approach and whisper something in His ear. You strain to hear what they say.
“They do not need to go away,” Jesus says. “Give them something to eat.”
Looking around, you notice for the first time how many people there are. The crowd stretches as far as you can see! Your stomach growls. It’s been a long time since breakfast.
“We have only five loaves of bread and two fish,” a disciple explains.
“Bring them here to me,” Jesus says.
Before you know it, Jesus blesses the food and starts passing it out. Soon, delicious food comes your way. You eat some and pass more to those behind you.
He truly must be the Son of God, you realize. Then you smile up at heaven and thank God for sending His Son, and for caring about even your smallest needs.
How has God cared for my basic needs this week?
Loving Lord, Thank You for being a personal God, and for caring about even my smallest needs. Thank You for providing more than enough grace and salvation for everyone. In Your Son Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
