Wellspring of Peace

by Beatrice Jean-Baptiste

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.”

The word “come” is an invitation.

It welcomes you to engage and interact with the speaker who made the request for your presence. Examples such as “Please come in,” “Come with us,” or “Come and see me,” all suggest a desire to connect.

As humans, we thrive on connection and intimacy. We were made for community. We enjoy receiving invitations to social events that foster our innate desire to connect.

Have you ever gotten an invitation to a social gathering and the thought of going made you smile as you imagined the event and your friends who would attend? In today’s verse, Jesus has sent out an invitation guaranteed to leave you satisfied. He promises that after responding to His invitation, you will be lighter and more fulfilled than you were beforehand.

Jesus is inviting you to enjoy His presence. There, you will find genuine rest — the rest your soul craves. You are only one decision away from enjoying peace of mind.

Today, your heavy burdens can be taken away from you. That’s what Jesus does best: He shares in our burdens. Your burdens cannot overwhelm Jesus because His ultimate desire is to grant you a wellspring of peace.

Come to Him, engage and interact with Him, and find rest for your soul.

Reflection

How will I respond to Jesus’ invitation to rest? What burdens will I give Him?

Prayer

Gracious Redeemer, I accept Your invitation to rest. Today, I give You all of my burdens and ask that You would grant me Your heavenly peace. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
