Jesus in the Morning

by Heather Tietz

John 6:55-57

For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father; so he who feeds on me, he will also live because of me.

Jesus calls Himself the Bread of Heaven (John 6:41; John 6:51).

When the Israelites wandered the wilderness looking forward to the Promised Land, God fed them manna every morning. Manna: a life-sustaining, nutrient-filled, all-inclusive sweet meal.

This miraculous harvest was all the sustenance the Israelites needed for the day. It came with no laborious plowing, no sowing seed, no hoping for rain, no shooing of pests, no guarding from raiders. All they had to do was to trust for it, and then gather it. This God-given chore sustained the Israelites for forty years.

We have a miraculous manna too. Jesus. He’s the abundant harvest waiting to be gathered into our lives every day.

We, too, can look forward to savoring something sweet, fulfilling, and specific to our needs every morning. We can take it from Bibles, devotionals and worship songs. In a rush, we can pluck it from the hidden place in our hearts. Then, satisfied, we can sing it, pray it and serve it to those around us through patient feet, kind hands, and listening ears.

When we gather up Jesus at the start of the day we’ll find ourselves more hopeful, more faithful and more loving.

Who would forfeit a Godly breakfast? It sustains us while we wander this life looking toward the Promised Land.

Reflection

What do I spend most of my day “eating?” How can I “snack” on Jesus all day?

Prayer

Thank You, Lord, for making Yourself available to me all the time. Please remind me to come to You every morning with listening ears and a willing heart. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
