The Blessed Thorn

by Heather Tietz

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

Bible characters are flawed, but their troubles have often given God a stage for showcasing His power.

Moses had a stutter, yet God used Him to communicate His law to the Israelites and His demands to Pharaoh.

Sarah, Rachael, and John the Baptist’s mothers suffered infertility, yet they each eventually bore children that carried on Jesus’ story.

David was young and weak, yet He was the one to destroy Goliath.

Jonah’s stubbornness got him swallowed up in the belly of a great fish, but through his three days and nights of suffering, we have one of the greatest metaphors of the gospel.

The apostle Paul suffered some type of ailment he called a “thorn in his side.” Though he could heal others, his own body continued hurting.

In 2 Corinthians 12, he pleads for God’s healing.

But God had a plan for Paul and his “thorn.” In Paul’s discomfort, God had the platform to be his strength.

A strong man, a great orator, a woman with a perfect reproductive system may not have space for God’s power in those parts of their lives. But when there’s a lack, God’s grace has a place. In our weakness, He can show His strength.

Reflection

What “thorn” do I bear? How might the “thorn” I have today showcase the might, the love, and the wisdom of the Almighty?

Prayer

Dear Lord, You know what thorn hurts me. Please help my perspective to change so I can see Your power displayed through my trouble. Your grace is all I need, Lord. It is enough. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
