They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
Paul and Silas were preaching the message of the Gospel to everyone who would listen. Their preaching upset the Jewish leaders, though, so they had them flogged and jailed. Around midnight that night, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, while the other prisoners listened. Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off!
When the jailer in charge of guarding Paul and Silas was awakened by an earthquake and saw that the prison doors were open, he assumed the prisoners had escaped. The jailer knew if a prisoner escaped under his watch, he would be executed. Not wanting to experience the shame of execution, he drew his sword to kill himself.
Paul called out to the guard, however, and assured him that he and Silas were still in their cell. He said, ”Stop! Don’t kill yourself! We are all here!” The jailer could not believe it. But because Paul and Silas had not left, he believed they truly were men of God. So he asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
Paul and Silas said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” The jailer and his family believed and were baptized that very night.
Pray: Father, when I face unexpected difficult situations help me remember that You are the only Way—the only One who can save me from everything. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
