I remember the first time my husband and I went shopping in a particular store.

A salesman launched into his pitch about the superiority of the shoe polish he was selling.

“But,” my husband responded, “I already have some polish that does just fine.”

Ignoring his comment, the man went on to describe the qualities of his product and urged us to buy it, try it, and see for ourselves. It was a little thing, but I was impressed that my husband, who had grown up in terrible poverty and could now afford this minor item, resisted the “upgrade” and continued to look for what we had come for. He refused to be discontent with what we had.

Discontentment is an interesting state of mind. Perhaps we experience discontent because we’re tired of not having what we want; or of looking poorer, less educated, less up-to-date than our neighbors; or perhaps we think “if only I had such-and-such, I would be able to do this or that.”

But if God says He’ll never leave or forsake us, then that means He’s involved with our life. We can be content and free of jealousy because we are under the care and direction of the richest and most powerful Being in the universe.

God Himself has already supplied everything we could ever need.
