A Broken Heart

by Pastor Ken

Psalm 51:17

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. O God, you will not despise a broken and contrite heart.

There are four blessings God offers to someone with a broken spirit or a broken heart.

First, brokenness exposes an inner light. When Gideon’s army broke their clay pitchers, the flame shined and darkness disappeared (Judges 7:19). Christians are called to be the “light of the world” (Philippians 2:15). Often, we must be broken so the light of the Lord shines out.

Second, brokenness produces new life (John 12:24). Jesus’ broken body on the cross gave you eternal life. Your will should be broken to do His will. Your agendas should be broken so God can direct your path, showing you great and marvelous things (Job 5:9; Job 9:10).

Third, when you are broken, as Mary broke the alabaster jar (Mark 14:3), whatever is inside of you will be released. Everything of value within you will pour out a sweet aroma to Jesus and to others. Brokenness releases the fragrance of humble servanthood.

Fourth, brokenness allows for multiplication. Just as Jesus broke the seven loaves and fishes to feed thousands (Matthew 15:36), when you allow God to break you, He will multiply you.

God only breaks you to bless you. Surrender your brokenness and the blessings of God will start. The moment you abandon your reliance on your own resources and submit to God’s will, He will accept your sacrifice, meet your needs, and more.

Reflection

What do I really want God to do in my life? Am I willing to give Him my brokenness? Do I believe He can make me whole? Do I trust Him with my dreams? Why or why not?

Prayer

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
