The Closet Christian

by David Haase

1 Corinthians 10:31

Whether therefore you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Unexpectedly one morning, my wife asked me to take her to church.

She knew exactly where she wanted to go. So we went.

The welcome was warm, but not great. Even so, we decided to go back the next week.

I had been previously hurt by a church and was reluctant to get involved, other than attending once a week. But the preacher was preaching about Nicodemus (John 3). He called Nicodemus a “closet Christian” — scared to proclaim Jesus as his Savior, yet he believed enough to go to Jesus in the night and even defended Jesus to the authorities.

The preacher then asked, “How many closet Christians do we have here today?” I felt he was looking at me when he asked that question.

Leaving church that day was profoundly different for me. I was exactly what the preacher said: A CLOSET CHRISTIAN!

My life started to change that day. Each day I strived to get better.

My wife and I started attending Bible studies and joined the church. I became more involved, attending lay speaking classes. Materialistic things did not matter so much anymore. Eventually, I became a pastor. Today I no longer keep my faith closeted.

I am proud to say I am a called servant of God! How about you?

Reflection

Have I been guilty, lately, of being a closet Christian? What is God calling me to do for His glory?

Prayer

Heavenly Lord, Thank You for Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You for those who opened my eyes, enabling me to open my heart. May everything I do to be to Your glory. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen!
