Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man’s wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.
“The Thing Explainer” is a book for curious minds. In it, author Randall Munroe takes some of the more complicated manmade designs and breaks them down into simple parts with simple instructions.
Using only a thousand of the most common words, Munroe makes college science into elementary play. The workings of complicated things like “tall roads” (bridges) or those “boxes that make clothes smell better” (washing machines) can be understood by almost anyone. Science that would have caused wrinkles before now draws up smile lines.
Understanding is a quiet pleasure.
How nice it is to “get it.” Figuring out how to make those first sounds into words, how to balance your weight to walk or pedal a bicycle forward, can revolutionize our lives. Wisdom does likewise.
Wisdom, unlike book smarts, isn’t selective.
Anyone can obtain it. It comes neatly tucked into a “Life Explainer” book called the Bible. The very wisdom the Queen of Sheba came to seek from Solomon, the same wisdom Jesus shared with His closest friends, is available to all.
James 1:5 says that if any of us lacks wisdom, we can ask God for it and He will give generously. There is a God-given “I get it!” out there for us too.
In what areas in my life do I feel I lack wisdom? What will I do to change that?
Holy God, I need Your wisdom to direct my steps. Help me to earnestly turn to You for guidance and enlightenment. Please give me the answers I’m seeking. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
