It’s Not the Healing: It’s the Relationship

by Ami Hendrickson

Matthew 9:35

Jesus went about all the cities and the villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.

Somehow, in her exuberant running, my dog, Zephyr, scratched her eye. I have to put medicine in it regularly to keep it clean and free of infection while it heals.

Zephyr hates this.

The medicine doesn’t hurt her. Shortly after I administer it, her eye stops tearing and she stops squinting. However, this does not mean she enjoys the procedure.

Yet, Zephyr allows me to doctor her because we have a close relationship. She may not like my nursing, but she loves me and trusts me implicitly. I also believe that in her big, goofy, doggy heart, she knows I am helping her.

When on earth, Jesus possessed the ultimate power. He could have wiggled His little finger and healed everybody on the planet of every illness. But humanity would have never developed any trust in Him had He done so.

So, He went from town to town preaching and teaching and healing. He listened to people’s complaints, answered their questions, and showed them how to relieve their pain: by developing a relationship with Him.

His methods haven’t changed. All He wants from us is to get to know Him and accept the blessings He wants to give us.

Reflection

Being healed isn’t always an enjoyable experience. When did I last experience divine healing that challenged me?

Prayer

Precious Lord, Thank You for sending Your Son to meet me where I live. Thank You for wanting a relationship with me. Help me to trust You more every day. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
