In the 1990s, an extreme sport developed within surfing called tow-in surfing. It involved surfers being pulled on jet skis into extreme waves, 20 feet and higher. Then, with the momentum acquired and specially shortened boards, surfers could ride surf in excess of fifty feet. Surely a thrilling ride!

The apostle James would have been familiar with extreme waves. As Jesus’ brother, he lived near the temperamental Sea of Galilee. It’s likely he’d seen boats tossed by wild waves and heard tales from frightened fisherman. In this verse he warns, “Don’t live like this, pushed around by the winds, directionless.”

As Jesus’ follower, we have a Captain. He knows the best direction. He can deal with broken rudders, damaged sails and sailors who are afraid. Remember, He knew which side of the boat the fish were swimming on. He calmed the storm. He walked on water. He’s the creator of the ocean, after all!

So when we need wisdom, we can ask Him. Like Daniel, it may come after a night of prayer. Like Hannah, it may come from a priest. Like Joseph, God’s wisdom could come in a dream. Like Esther, it may come after days of fasting. We can pray too and then in faith, sincerely look and listen for God’s answer.

There is a right direction. Save those wild rides for vacation!
