The guy was sick; really sick!

He and his sisters lived together and now these women were worried about him. He was getting worse every day.

They knew a good doctor, their brother’s best friend, who happened to be away at the time. So they contacted him, urging him to come before it was too late.

But the doctor took his time. His traveling companions tried to hurry him along, but he just said his friend was sleeping, and proceeded towards the town at his own pace.

In the meantime, Lazarus died.

Jesus, the Great Physician, tells us that death is like sleep, a state of unconsciousness. And from this “slumber,” He called Lazarus back to life.

The first death we experience on earth is not the last word. Every one of us who dies will be resurrected from the grave at the end of time — to receive eternal life or eternal death.

Belief in Jesus is what enables us not to experience eternal death. To believe means to accept Him as Truth and to live in harmony with His truth. Then our earthly death will only be an interruption, a prelude to everlasting life on Resurrection Day. We may die here, but we don’t have to meet up with the real thing!
