Christian Community

by Erica Cosgrove

1 Corinthians 12:26-27

When one member suffers, all the members suffer with it. When one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

Jesus lived a life that showed us what community and doing life together looks like.

He set in motion a group of people who spread the gospel and established churches after He left.

While it is easy to focus on our own church and denomination, Christ actually calls us to something wider. Back when church was established, they were small communities, meeting in homes. It was families doing life together and working to spread the gospel.

Today, we believers have grown. A lot. However, the goal is the same: spread the good news, do life together, support each other.

As Paul told the Corinthians, we are member’s of Christ’s body, which is the church. We are part of a community that does life together to the point that we share each other’s trials as well as successes. This community is in Christ. We may have our separate denominations, but there are many Christians that are all working to spread the gospel.

We are all pieces of the body. We are to support each other through trial and rejoice with each other in success. Each individual and each church is an individual part, but each part is necessary for the effective working of the whole.

May we learn to see all of our fellow Christians as important pieces of the body.

Reflection

What is my role as a member of Christ’s body?

Prayer

Dear God, help me to be community not only for my church, but also for everyone who is in Christ. We are all one in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
