Relationship Leads to Confidence

by Erica Cosgrove

2 Timothy 1:12

For this cause I also suffer these things. Yet I am not ashamed, for I know him whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to guard that which I have committed to him against that day.

I will never forget the first time I went caving.

I felt so out of my element and had to rely on other people for tips.

At one point in our adventure, I had to reach a ledge I couldn’t see. I didn’t like the idea of moving down without seeing where my feet would land, but one of our team members, who had already gone down, told me to extend my legs and start descending.

I believed what he said. Because of the relationship we had, I began the descent.

There is a confidence we have in people we know.

In Paul’s letter of 2 Timothy, he expresses that we can have such a confidence in Christ. It isn’t because we have only heard of Him, but because we have a relationship with Him. In this verse, Paul says he knew the one who He believed in, and because of that He had confidence.

You, too, can have confidence in God when you know the one you believe in. When we cultivate a relationship with God, we discover who He is and we grow in belief.

In this relationship, we can then proclaim, as Paul did, that we are not ashamed of our God and that we are confident in His ability to save us.

Reflection

How can I better my relationship with God so I can confidently say that I know the One I believe in?

Prayer

Dear God, Thank You for wanting a relationship with me. Because I know You and believe in You, I have confidence in You. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
