I remember an exercise a youth pastor once did with my youth group:

He asked us to picture a loved one walking on train tracks. Suddenly, a train starts barreling down the tracks and there is no time to get out of the way! Would we jump in front of it to save them?

After some thought, most of us said “yes.”

“What if it was just your friend?” the pastor asked.

Again, most of us said yes, we would jump.

“What if it was your enemy?”

We were silent.

“Would you still save them?”

Because of sin, we were God’s enemies. And yet, He came down to earth as the perfect sacrifice and died a terrible death on the cross, to save us from our sins.

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Jesus gave of Himself freely. He offers the salvation that cost Him His life to everyone for free. All we have to do is believe in Him.

God proved His love for us on the cross, once and for all. We can trust in Him and His plan, even when the world seems to be falling apart.
