Husband brings flowers and candy to his wife every Valentine’s Day for over 40 years.

Mother changes baby’s diapers for as long as it takes.

Wife changes husband’s diapers as long as she is able.

Child brings parents breakfast in bed on a special occasion or sweeps the kitchen floor or does the dishes.

You get the picture. Love is sometimes flowers and sometimes dull or dirty duties. But it’s a picture of faithfulness.

When someone humiliates you in front of your friends, at first you’re embarrassed and hurt. Then you’re angry. But that ugly act tells you that the person is deeply wounded somehow. You choose to forgive and, thus, are being faithful to your fellow human who is made in the image of God, even though they don’t reflect it.

I’ll never forget when I dropped someone’s dish at potluck and my beloved came and stood by me, unashamed to be associated with such a klutz.

Love isn’t always pink and fuzzy. It is a hardy, persistent pursuit of godliness in all our relations of life. It is a fountain of life-giving words and actions that faithfully seek to build up the other. And God Himself is the epitome of such incomparable love.
