Slowing Down for Fellowship

by Erica Cosgrove

Acts 2:46

Day by day, continuing steadfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart.

Western society tends to do life at a constant fast pace.

The days of family meals around the dinner table and long evening conversations seem to be of a bygone era. Instead, we are constantly on the go, grabbing fast food, snatching tidbits of conversation over the phone in between appointments, and ending the days tuned out. Even when quarantines drastically changed our world, our busyness just shifted to online appointments and ordering take-out. Sadly, fellowship and community are still lacking in many places.

As God’s people, we are called to be different in many ways. One of them is in fellowship.

Acts 2:46 describes one defining aspect of God’s community: fellowship.

God’s people enjoy fellowship by worshiping together and eating together. Good company, good food, and good conversation are, in my mind, some of the most satisfying experiences. We were meant to enjoy time with our fellow believers, and to do life together. Over a meal, differences can be set aside. Believers can laugh together, finding joy in each other’s company and in the bond of hearts set on Jesus.

Take some time today to reflect on the people God has placed in your life with whom you can slow down and enjoy good fellowship.

Reflection

How can I find time this week for joyful fellowship with fellow believers?

Prayer

Dear God, Thank You for the blessing of fellowship. Thank You for the people You have placed in my life with whom I can work, laugh, play, worship, and enjoy the journey. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
