Peace, in Spite Of…

by Brenda Kis

John 14:1, 27

Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me. Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

Jen wailed, “I know what she’s doing and I’m afraid I’m going to be fired!”

“What’s happening?” I asked.

A litany of injustices, job pressures, and insinuations followed. “I can’t keep up and I’ve been stuffing my feelings for so long,” she sobbed.

The next day she was scheduled for an appointment with her supervisor, who was asking for an account of how many emails she dealt with daily and how to perform certain procedures. Jen hadn’t even been on the job for a year and the learning curve felt overwhelming. Just when she got the hang of something, they changed the rules, or the procedure, or added another task.

A puddle of negative emotions at that moment, Jen had forgotten that she didn’t have to face anything alone. She was living like an orphan instead of tapping into the amazing promises of God. Fortunately, she found peace as she chose to believe Him.

When we read the words, “Don’t let your heart be troubled,” it implies that we have the choice. We can go it alone, or we can call on God to calm our minds. We can let our thoughts lead us into a pit of frustration and fear, or we can remind ourselves that we are not abandoned to handle things on our own.

Reflection

I may believe in God, but do I believe God? What keeps me from believing His promises?

Prayer

Dear God, Please comfort me with Your thoughts about what’s happening to me. Help me hang on to Your promises and remember that I am not alone. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
