Lost in the Jungle

by Brenda Kis

1 Timothy 2:5

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

In 1971, 17-year-old Juliane Diller was traveling with her zoologist mother to a biological research station in the Amazon.

Somewhere over the Peruvian rainforest, LANSA Flight 508 flew into a thunderstorm. As the plane shuddered, Juliane watched a bolt of lightning strike the right wing. She remembers the aircraft diving towards the ground and her row of seats careening through the air, then everything went silent.

She awoke on Christmas morning from the nearly two-mile plunge with a broken collarbone, a sprained knee, gashes, and one eye swollen shut. Her seat must have landed in dense foliage, cushioning the impact. Juliane was the sole survivor.

Remembering her parents’ counsel about what to do if lost in the rainforest, she staggered towards a creek which eventually became a river.

Eleven days later, after surviving in the home of 8-foot caimans, poisonous snakes, and stinging insects, she came upon a camp of forest workers who treated her wounds and helped her return to Lima. The path of moving water had been the only way out of the jungle and back to her father.

The human race is also traveling through a jungle of sin and pain.

In an effort to survive and find peace, everyone seeks some path. But there is only one way, one mediator between God and humanity, one who is simultaneously both God and man.

Reflection

What can I do to learn more about Jesus Christ as my mediator? In what ways do I follow where He leads?

Prayer

Holy God, Please help me to follow the only path to salvation: Jesus Christ, the Water of Life. In His name I pray, Amen.
