Bible verses about
Death

The plague of death taints every aspect of life on earth. All have sinned, the apostle Paul reminded the Roman church (Romans 3:23) and “the wages of sin is death.” Praise God that death will not claim us forever! For Paul reminds all of us who believe in Jesus that “the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23 WEB).

Jesus Christ provides my victory over sin and death

1 Corinthians 15:54-57

But when this perishable body will have become imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then what is written will happen: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “Death, where is your sting? Sheol, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

From the beginning of time, death was the penalty for not following God’s Law

Exodus 31:14-15

You shall keep the Sabbath therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall surely be put to death.

I will not fear; Jesus holds the eternal keys to Death

Revelation 1:17-18

When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man. He laid his right hand on me, saying, “Don’t be afraid. I am the first and the last, and the Living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever. Amen. I have the keys of Death and of Hades.”

God comforts me even in the face of Death itself

Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

I will fear neither death nor life; Jesus is the Lord of both

Romans 14:8-9

For if we live, we live to the Lord. Or if we die, we die to the Lord. If therefore we live or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died, rose, and lived again, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

The dead are not conscious; they do not know anything

Ecclesiastes 9:5

For the living know that they will die, but the dead don’t know anything, neither do they have any more a reward; for their memory is forgotten.

Believing in Jesus saves me from eternal death

John 11:25-26

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

God is stronger than the grave

Isaiah 25:8

He has swallowed up death forever! The Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces. He will take the reproach of his people away from off all the earth, for the LORD has spoken it.

Death cannot separate me from Christ’s love

Romans 8:38-39

For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Death is like sleep; those who die will “sleep” until Jesus returns

1 Thessalonians 4:13-17

But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with God’s trumpet. The dead in Christ will rise first, then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever.
