Be Still

by Katelyn Molloy

Psalm 27:1, 3

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid? Though an army should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear. Though war should rise against me, even then I will be confident.

The wind and the waves on the Sea of Galilee rocked the disciples’ boat. Water poured in faster than they could bail it out, threatening to sink them. They cried out to Jesus, sleeping in the back of the boat, to save them!

Jesus awoke and said to the storm, “Peace, be still.”

Instantly, the storm was over. The black clouds rolled away, the waves calmed, and the wind died down.

Then Jesus turned to them and said, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40 NIV).

His disciples looked at each other in awe and asked themselves “what manner of man is this? That even the wind and the sea obey Him?” (Mark 4:41).

It’s easy to be like the disciples during the storms of life.

We think we have everything under control. But when the black storm clouds roll in, and the wind rages, and the waves threaten to sink us; it can feel like God is sleeping.

So we cry out like the disciples, “don’t you care if we drown?” (Mark 4:38 NIV).

In those moments, it’s important to remind ourselves that Jesus is in control. When we are blinded by the darkness, we need to trust that He has a plan. And He is capable of calming any storm.

Reflection

What are some things I can do to help strengthen my faith and remind myself that God is in control?

Prayer

Dear God, Please give me more faith in You. You are my strength and courage. I know You’re in control. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
