Heartfelt Worship

by Beatrice Jean-Baptiste

Ephesians 5:18-19

Don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.

When she was six weeks old, Fanny Crosby became blind. At the tender age of six months, her father passed away.

To say that Crosby had a rough start in life is an understatement. But despite these setbacks, she grew up to be one of the most prolific hymn writers in American history. She is credited with writing over 8,000 hymns and is considered the “mother of modern congregational singing in America.”

Fanny Crosby’s faith in God is evident in her songs of praise.

Despite her lack of eyesight, she was able to see the glory of God through faith. The Holy Spirit inspired heartfelt musical praise with every song she penned. Songs like “Blessed Assurance” and “To God Be the Glory” have been translated into many languages and have blessed generations of Christians, as well as leading many souls to a deeper relationship with their Maker.

God used Crosby in a mighty way. He can do the same through you and me.

We may not have the same talent as Fanny Crosby but that doesn’t have to be a roadblock in our heartfelt worship of God. In Ephesians 5:18-19, the Apostle Paul encourages us as believers to worship God through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. In doing so, we allow our faith to overflow in melodic, heartfelt worship for the joy and glory of God.
