My great-grandmother was an inspiring woman.

She never let life or old age slow her down. In her late 90s and into her 100s she was determined to live life for God and to live life well.

Every day, even in her last year at 104, she would kneel on the floor beside her bed and pray. Starting with her oldest child she would pray for them, their spouse, the grandkids, and great-grandkids in birth order.

Just before she died, I spent a few days with her that consisted of praying and reading Scripture. Her greatest comfort was in God’s Word and in knowing that she was ready to see Him.

Of all the people I have known, I would say that she knew what it meant to delight in and find comfort in God’s law and Word. It was what kept her going, what sustained her.

In Psalm 119:76-77, the author says that God’s law is his delight and that His Word tells of the comfort God offers.

Like the psalmist and like my great-grandmother, may we also believe that God’s law and His Word are both a delight and are a source of comfort. There are so many words of love, affirmation, comfort, and wisdom in the Bible, we need only to pick it up and treasure what God has said to us.
