“Teach us to pray,” the disciples begged Jesus. And, like the loving Friend He is, Jesus granted their request (Matthew 6:9-13; also Luke 11:1-4).
What is prayer? Is it a conversation between two friends? A petition for justice? A cry for help? A shout of praise? Yes! Prayer is all of this and so much more. Prayer enables us to communicate with the God of the universe. Praise His name — He hears and answers!
Pray in Jesus’ name to receive joyous gifts from God
Until now, you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be made full.
Prayer brings God’s gifts
Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.
Agreement with other believers strengthens my prayers
Again, assuredly I tell you, that if two of you will agree on earth concerning anything that they will ask, it will be done for them by my Father who is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them.
God is ready to answer my prayers in an instant
It will happen that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
Pray for the right words to say when witnessing
With all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints: on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in opening my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the Good News.
I tell you, keep asking, and it will be given you. Keep seeking, and you will find. Keep knocking, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.
God hears my prayers
The LORD is near to all those who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of those who fear him. He also will hear their cry, and will save them. The LORD preserves all those who love him, but he will destroy all the wicked.
My connection to Jesus affects my prayers
If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.
God wants me to pray to Him
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. You shall call on me, and you shall go and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You shall seek me and find me, when you search for me with all your heart.”
Prayer can eliminate anxiety
In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
Prayer keeps me from falling prey to temptation
Watch and pray, that you don’t enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
My prayers help me honor God
Offer to God the sacrifice of thanksgiving. Pay your vows to the Most High. Call on me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you, and you will honor me.
Prayer opens me to receive gifts from God
If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
