Room for More

by Margaret Michel

John 4:34

Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.”

Funny thing: I notice that I always have room for dessert.

I may not even bear to smell the aroma, let alone take another bite, of my favorite dish, yet when the dinner plate is replaced with the dessert plate, I am be able to tolerate many more bites.

Wakefulness presents a similar situation. I can be so sleepy that I can barely stand, yet if the phone rings with someone in desperate need, instantly, I am wide awake, alert and able to provide assistance.

We’ve heard of individuals who show super strength to overturn vehicles, if needed, to rescue a child. Sometimes our human limitations are overcome when presented with new information.

The question is: whose needs are the “desserts” of my day that I succeed in fitting onto my plate? Are they my own or others’?

Furthermore, when I help one of God’s children, do I act as if doing so is a double helping of spinach or an aromatic apple pie?

When I eagerly do God’s will, I get my childhood wish to have my dessert first. I know that joyfully serving others pleases the Lord. No matter how full my life is, when I am enthusiastic about following where God leads, there is always room for more.

Reflection

How does the way I spend my time every day demonstrate my eagerness to do God’s will?

Prayer

Holy Lord, I need You in me in order to consistently find joy in putting others first. You can do all things. Please accomplish this in me to the glory of Your name. In Christ I pray, Amen.
