“Seek righteousness. Seek humility,” the prophet Zephaniah counsels (Zephaniah 2:3).
Throughout the Bible, humility is often cited as one of God’s favorite characteristics of His people. No matter how wealthy, talented, strong, or powerful a person is, everything pales when compared to the almighty Creator.
Jesus described Himself as humble — a positive, endearing reason for us to come to Him, find rest and restoration, and spend time with Him (Matthew 11:29).
Humility enriches my life
The result of humility and the fear of the LORD is wealth, honor, and life.
Humility is exalting
But he who is greatest among you will be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
The humble enjoy abundant peace
For yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more. Yes, though you look for his place, he isn’t there. But the humble shall inherit the land, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
The humble will enjoy preferential treatment in heaven
But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes, he may tell you, “Friend, move up higher.” Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
God hears the prayers of the humble
LORD, you have heard the desire of the humble. You will prepare their heart. You will cause your ear to hear, to judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that man who is of the earth may terrify no more.
Seeking humility and righteousness pleases God
Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land, who have kept his ordinances. Seek righteousness. Seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of the LORD’s anger.
Jesus’ humility is my example
Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus, who, existing in the form of God, didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross.
Salvation is the reward for humility
Let them praise his name in the dance! Let them sing praises to him with tambourine and harp! For the LORD takes pleasure in his people. He crowns the humble with salvation. Let the holy ones rejoice in honor. Let them sing for joy on their beds.
God gives grace to the humble
The LORD’s curse is in the house of the wicked, but he blesses the habitation of the righteous. Surely he mocks the mockers, but he gives grace to the humble. The wise will inherit glory, but shame will be the promotion of fools.
Jesus’ gentle humility draws me to Him and lets me rest
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
It is better to ally myself with the poor and humble than to associate with the rich and proud
It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor, than to divide the plunder with the proud.
My humility to others allows God to bless me with His grace
Likewise, you younger ones, be subject to the elder. Yes, all of you clothe yourselves with humility, to subject yourselves to one another; for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time, casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.
God Himself guides and teaches those who are humble
He will guide the humble in justice. He will teach the humble his way. What man is he who fears the LORD? He shall instruct him in the way that he shall choose.
The humble and childlike will thrive in heaven
Jesus called a little child to himself, and set him in the middle of them and said, “Most certainly I tell you, unless you turn and become as little children, you will in no way enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. Whoever therefore humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.”
God gives grace to the humble
But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
I must become humble before God can bless me with honor
The fear of the LORD teaches wisdom. Before honor is humility.
Humility brings honor
A man’s pride brings him low, but one of lowly spirit gains honor.
God lives with the humble and revives them
For the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy, says: “I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also who is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite.”
