Bible verses about
Virtue

Virtue isn’t a word we often hear, but that doesn’t mean we’re not aware of it in our daily lives. A virtue is a positive attribute that improves something or someone. Jesus Himself, we are told, demonstrated many virtues as He grew from a child into an adult: “And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man” (Luke 2:52 WEB).

The word “virtue” or “virtuous” is rarely found in the Bible, but the concept of deliberately developing positive traits and habits to glorify God permeates all of Scripture.

Virtue comes from deliberately filling our minds with good things

Philippians 4:8

Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report: if there is any virtue and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Virtue is associated with worthiness and is greatly valued

Proverbs 31:10-11

Jesus was the paragon of virtue; He is our example

2 Peter 1:2-4

Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, seeing that his divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and virtue, by which he has granted to us his precious and exceedingly great promises; that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world by lust.

A virtuous person who honors God blesses their entire family

Proverbs 31:28-30

Her children rise up and call her blessed. Her husband also praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you excel them all.” Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.

Virtue is powerful

Mark 5:30

Immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself that the power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd, and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”

If my friends and associates are not virtuous, they will ruin me

1 Corinthians 15:33-34

Don’t be deceived! “Evil companionships corrupt good morals.” Wake up righteously, and don’t sin, for some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.

People are desperate to experience the healing that the virtuous offer

Luke 6:19

All the multitude sought to touch him, for power came out of him and healed them all.

Virtue does not hide; everyone recognizes it when they see it

Ruth 3:11

Now, my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do to you all that you say; for all the city of my people knows that you are a worthy woman.

Faith supplies a person’s virtue, which leads to many desirable things

2 Peter 1:5-7

Yes, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence; and in moral excellence, knowledge; and in knowledge, self-control; and in self-control perseverance; and in perseverance godliness; and in godliness brotherly affection; and in brotherly affection, love.

The Lord blesses virtue with strength and valor

1 Samuel 16:18

Then one of the young men answered and said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the LORD is with him.”
