Bible verses about
Mental Health

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven” (Matthew 5:3).

It is a testament to our Savior’s empathy for and understanding of humanity that He began what would become His most famous sermon with a blessing for those who suffer from mental health issues.

Jesus, who “was despised and rejected… a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:3 KJV), understands mental anguish. Christ extends His love and mercy to all, saying, “Come to me, all you who… are heavily burdened and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

Isaiah 53:3

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering and acquainted with disease. He was despised as one from whom men hide their face; and we didn’t respect him.

Jesus knows exactly what I am going through, and has overcome it

Hebrews 4:15

God delivers my soul and gives me rest

Psalm 116:7-9

Return to your rest, my soul, for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you. For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

God alone has the power to keep me from stumbling

Jude 1:24-25

Now to him who is able to keep them from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory in great joy, to God our Savior, who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen.

God keeps me alive and delivers me from hellish depths

Psalm 30:2-4

LORD my God, I cried to you, and you have healed me. LORD, you have brought up my soul from Sheol. You have kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. Sing praise to the LORD, you holy ones of his. Give thanks to his holy name.

Jesus’ mission is to heal the sick; He has the power to do so

Mark 2:17

When Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

When I cry out to God in my darkest hours, He will guide me

Psalm 143:7-8

Hurry to answer me, LORD. My spirit fails. Don’t hide your face from me, so that I don’t become like those who go down into the pit. Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you.

Matthew 9:12

When Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick do.”

All have sinned, but everything the righteous do is in God’s hands

Ecclesiastes 9:1, 3

For all this I laid to my heart, even to explore all this: that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God; whether it is love or hatred, man doesn’t know it; all is before them. This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event to all: yes also, the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

My body may be weak, but the power of God fills me and will not let me be destroyed

2 Corinthians 4:7-9

But we have this treasure in clay vessels, that the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God, and not from ourselves. We are pressed on every side, yet not crushed; perplexed, yet not to despair; pursued, yet not forsaken; struck down, yet not destroyed.

God hears me when I cry out to Him, even when I am at my lowest

Jonah 2:2, 6-7

He said, “I called because of my affliction to the LORD. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried. You heard my voice. I went down to the bottoms of the mountains. The earth barred me in forever; yet you have brought my life up from the pit, LORD my God. When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD. My prayer came in to you, into your holy temple.”

Whatever plagues me here on earth is temporary when compared to my eternal life with God
