Take away from me the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. But let justice roll on like rivers, and righteousness like a mighty stream.
The little girl was all sweet smiles at school.
She adored her teacher and did whatever she thought would please her. And the teacher thought little Carol was the nicest child she had in her class. But it wasn’t true.
At home, Carol was another person. She grumbled when her mom asked her to help with the housework. She fussed when her play was interrupted and growled when she didn’t get her way.
One day, the teacher met the real Carol. Mother had invited Teacher for supper. While Teacher waited in the living room, Mother called Carol to come in and set the table.
“Why do I have to set the table all the time!” Carol fumed, throwing the silverware helter-skelter onto the nicely decorated tablecloth.
I’ll leave you to imagine her shame when Teacher came into the dining room and sat down.
This text from Amos has a similar message. The music mentioned here isn’t just any music. This is worship music, the highest form of music humanity can render to God!
Amos relays the message that the forms of religion are empty without the heart of righteousness. If we are cherishing known sin in our lives but pretending to honor God, we are fakes. God knows everything and what He really wants is the beautiful “music” of an honest relationship.
How might I be living a double life? What sort of music fills my heart?
Lord God, Help me to live before You in sincerity and truth, that my worship might be a song of integrity. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
