Louisa Stead was an immigrant who came to the U.S. and settled in New York City with her husband and child in the early 1800s.

The Steads were poor, but they had each other.

One day, the little family went to the beach for a picnic on Long Island. While there, they heard screams and realized that someone was drowning! Mr. Stead immediately went to save the boy, but sadly, both drowned.

Now the young widow, with her four-year-old, was even poorer. She knew no one and cried herself to sleep every night. One night she prayed, “Lord, I don’t know how You’re going to provide for me, but I claim Your promises and trust You.”

The next morning, as she stepped outside onto the porch, there was a basket of food! Overwhelmed with gratitude, she sat down and wrote the words of the hymn “‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus.”

Louisa was unknown in New York City, but not in heaven. Created in God’s image, she was precious to God. So are we.

When we are in financial or other difficulties, He sees and knows what to do. He has promised to supply every need. Nothing we face is beyond His capacity to help. If you have done your best and still struggle, entrust your problem to God.
