Fanny Crosby (1820-1915) was an American poet, lyricist, and composer. She wrote more than 8,000 hymns and gospel songs, despite being blinded shortly after birth.

One day when she was 63 years old, she was reading John 11 in her Braille Bible.

In the story, Mary and Martha mourn the passing of their brother, Lazarus. People from town try unsuccessfully to comfort them, but the death of the head of their family has devastated the sisters.

When Jesus arrives, Martha goes out to meet Him. Then she runs into the room where Mary is weeping.

She says, “The Teacher (Jesus) is here and is calling you” (John 11:28).

Mary’s sorrow vanishes at these words.

Fanny Crosby felt Jesus was calling her. There is no better encouragement and comfort. Struck with sudden inspiration, she penned the famous hymn “Jesus Is Tenderly Calling Thee Home.”
