You therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware, lest being carried away with the error of the wicked, you fall from your own steadfastness. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.
In 1968, in rural France, 18-year old Philippe Petit read about the newly constructed Twin Towers in New York City.
Obsessed with tightrope walking, he had an idea.
For the next six years, he practiced and planned how he would walk between the 1776-foot, swaying buildings. He had to plan how to how to rig a 200 foot, 450 pound steel cable across the 138 foot gap between the towers at a height of 1,368 feet — and do it without a safety net or permission!
On the morning of August 7, 1974, Philippe stepped out on the wire and found sure footing. For 45 minutes he walked, danced, lay on the wire and knelt to salute watchers. Six years of practice and planning gave Him the confidence to perform with joy.
Philip’s successful stunt turned what the public thought were unsightly buildings into famous towers.
We have a narrow walk too, a road to heaven that takes practice and planning. It’s a seemingly impossible task to walk it as Jesus did. We fall, but with His grace He picks us up and sets us right. He grows our skills in loving others and loving God. He gives us balance and joy, as we find sure footing and peace that God will keep us from falling to our doom.
What daily practices do I have in place that help me stay balanced and keep me from falling into wicked activities or attitudes?
Thank you, God, for Your grace when I fall and repent. Give me balance and joy each day as I walk the narrow way to heaven. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
