Why Should I Obey God?

The Bible deals with obedience extensively. The Ten Commandments illustrate how important obedience is to God. Deuteronomy 11 says: Obey, and you will be blessed. Disobey, and you will be cursed. In the New Testament, Jesus’ life shows that I, too, am called to a life of obedience.
I obey God because I love Him and want Him to live with me
John 14:23
Jesus answered him, “If a man loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our home with him.”
My obedience can be a witness to God and the gospel
Matthew 5:16
Even so, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
In faith, I believe that God’s commands are for my own good
Deuteronomy 6:24; 10:13
The LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as we are today. To keep the LORD’s commandments and statutes, which I command you today for your good.
Obedience involves hope in future blessing
Mark 10:29-30
Jesus said, “Most certainly I tell you, there is no one who has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or land, for my sake, and for the sake of the Good News, but he will receive one hundred times more now in this time: houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and land, with persecutions; and in the age to come eternal life.
Obedience to God is my sacred duty
Ecclesiastes 12:13
This is the end of the matter. All has been heard. Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man.
