When Jesus was on this earth, living among us, He routinely sought the fellowship of other believers and went to Sabbath worship services (see Luke 4:15-30 for one memorable incident).
We are all part of the body of Christ. Not only can we draw strength and courage from associating with other believers, but God also wants us to use our unique talents to benefit our congregation.
The church is not an ornate building. It is not defined by earthly wealth. The church is the believers’ community. Praise God — He promises to join us whenever two or three humble believers gather together to worship in His name (Matthew 18:20).
The church loves and supports each other while looking forward to Christ’s return
Let’s consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
The church prays for its members in trouble
Peter therefore was kept in the prison, but constant prayer was made by the assembly to God for him.
The church is a community that grows and fellowships together
Then those who gladly received his word were baptized. There were added that day about three thousand souls. They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer.
God blesses and grows unified, blameless, loving congregations
Day by day, continuing steadfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart, praising God, and having favor with all the people. The Lord added to the assembly day by day those who were being saved.
When the church is in agreement, God can do wondrous things through them
Again, assuredly I tell you, that if two of you will agree on earth concerning anything that they will ask, it will be done for them by my Father who is in heaven.
God fellowships with His believers
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them.
Christ’s selfless love for His church is the blueprint for husbands to follow
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly, and gave himself up for it.
Every church member is part of the body of Christ
For no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord also does the assembly; because we are members of his body, of his flesh and bones.
Every church member has a purpose
For even as we have many members in one body, and all the members don’t have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.
The church leaders have an obligation to those who are hurting
Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
Every believer is a temple of God, where His Spirit lives
Don’t you know that you are a temple of God, and that God’s Spirit lives in you?
Jesus promises that His church will stand against demonic forces
I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
The church’s strength is in its diversity
For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all given to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many.
