She used to cover her face with an apron just so she could find time to pray in a room filled with children.

As a homeschooling mom of 19 children, ten of whom lived to adulthood, Susanna Wesley had to get creative to get into God’s presence. Her responsibilities were many, especially since her husband traveled often. Despite this, she made it her business to teach her children Christian virtues.

Many are familiar with her sons, John and Charles Wesley.

John Wesley was a well-known 18th-century revivalist and his brother, Charles Wesley, was a prolific writer who wrote over 6,000 hymns. But long before they were giants of the Christian faith and founders of the Methodist Church, they were small boys who were raised by a devoted Christian mother.

Susanna Wesley played an integral part in her children’s spiritual development. In fact, she would designate days of the week to speak to each child and draw their hearts to Christ. She understood that wise women teach with kindness.

In Proverbs 31, we find a woman who understands the power of words and the importance of kindness. She is praised because she uses her words wisely and kindly.

Our words have a far-reaching effect. They outlive us and have the potential to change the world through those we teach. So, let’s speak wisely and instruct kindly.
