The ridiculously unexpected makes us laugh.

Mangayamma Yaramati will attest to that. At 74, she became a first-time mother!

Mangayamma and her husband wanted children their whole marriage. In India, infertility is shamed, especially for women. The rates of domestic abuse are higher for women who can’t bear children; often, their husbands take on a second wife. The couples are uninvited to child naming ceremonies and discouraged from giving blessings at weddings. Many infertile women see themselves as bad luck.

But Mangayamma and her husband remained faithful to one another for 54 years. Finally, after multiple fertility treatments, 74-year-old Mangayamma and her 82-year-old husband gave birth to twins. As of September 2019, she is the oldest modern-day mother.

But Abraham and Sarah still top the list for the oldest parents.

At the birth of Isaac, Sarah was ninety and Abraham was one hundred. There was no infertility treatment in their day. Isaac’s birth was nothing other than a miracle.

Mangayamma’s husband said, “It is due to the grace of God and doctors that I have now become a proud father of two baby girls. God has answered our prayers. This is the happiest time of my life.”

Of course! I’m sure God Himself appreciates a good laugh in His name.
