Grass Is Greener Syndrome

by Beatrice Jean-Baptiste

Matthew 6:30

But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today exists and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, won’t he much more clothe you, you of little faith?

Do you have Grass Is Greener Syndrome?

Many people experience this common illness. It’s a mindset that believes others have better situations than you do. It prevents you from being content. It leads you straight into a comparison trap, always longing for more.

Fear and a lack of trust lie at the heart of the Syndrome. It is deeply rooted in a lie that God doesn’t care about you and He’s not working things out for your good. The truth is, God knows us more intimately than we know ourselves.

Simply looking at grass can show us how God intimately knows and cares for us.

Grass covers about twenty percent of the earth’s land mass. There are 10,000 different species of grass in the world.

In Matthew 6, Jesus tells us that since He so intimately cares for grass, vegetation that is here today and gone tomorrow, how much more will He care for you and me? His love and concern for us goes beyond His care for grass.

We need not worry about tomorrow. We need not suffer from the Grass Is Greener Syndrome because God’s abundant provision for things in nature — like grass — illustrates His love and care for human beings made in His image.

Reflection

Do I believe God cares for and knows me intimately? Why or why not? How can I make my little faith grow bigger?

Prayer

Loving Lord, Thank You for loving, knowing, and caring for me intimately. I know that since You care for all of Your creation, You will always do what is best for me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
